Sony Reveals Project Q: A Novel Game-Changer in Handheld Devices Unveiled
- 23 Aug 2023
Sony has now officially named and priced its handheld gaming device, previously codenamed Project Q. Now known as the PlayStation Portal remote player, the price tag will be £199.99. The device aims to bring the PS5 gaming experience to a handheld format, featuring the same capabilities as a DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. The remote player will also offer a screen with the potential for 1080p resolution at 60fps.
Gamers who need to share a TV space or desire to play their PS5 games in various rooms will find this device especially beneficial. The PlayStation Portal, however, is not a standalone console like the GameBoy. Users will need an existing PS5 with games installed and a WiFi connection, preferably a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps, recommended by Sony for optimal playing experience.
Certain games like PS VR2 games requiring a headset and cloud-streamed games through PlayStation Plus Premium will not be supported on the PlayStation Portal. The handheld device is planned to be launched within the year, although a specific date is yet to be announced. More information on the device, including pre-order details, are promised to be released by the PlayStation team soon.
Sony also provided updates on its Pulse Explore wireless earbuds and the new Pulse Elite wireless headset. Ryan had previously mentioned to investors that the then unnamed Project Q formed part of an ambitious cloud gaming strategy meant to exploit mobile gaming trends.
