WhatsApp Expands Topic-Based ‘Channels’ to More Global Markets
- 18 Sep 2023
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, WhatsApp is not lagging behind. The messaging giant has recently expanded its unique feature, 'Channels', to an additional 150 markets globally. This comes after the successful initial launch of the feature in Colombia and Singapore earlier in the year. Channels is essentially a one-way broadcasting service designed to keep users informed about their preferred topics right within the WhatsApp app.
The Channels feature is ingeniously located in a separate tab from the regular chats, thus allowing users to maximize WhatsApp for real-time news and updates on key topics of interest. This innovation underscores WhatsApp's commitment to providing a platform that not only connects people but also serves as a vital source of information. The privacy of users is a priority as well, which is reflected in the fact that Channels are kept separate from chats, and the choice of channels to follow is not visible to other followers.
In its bid to keep information timely and relevant, WhatsApp has ensured that channel updates only last for 30 days. This means that users get only the latest and most pertinent information on their chosen topics. Furthermore, the company has enhanced the Channels directory, offering users a wider range of options to choose from. Thousands of organizations, sports teams, artists, and thought leaders have now been integrated into the app, thereby providing a plethora of options for improved engagement with relevant topics.
The introduction of Channels coincides with the current trend of users switching from public social media posts to Direct Messages (DMs) for communication. This makes Channels a potentially valuable and widely used feature of the app. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has been keen to tap into this trend, which is also evident in similar features available on Instagram. Instagram recently added "Notes" as another DM interaction option, and Meta is looking to further utilize WhatsApp's business potential and shopping tools via additional connectivity and discovery features.
While the use of DMs for such purposes is a topic of ongoing debate, this move by WhatsApp is a significant one. Messaging is traditionally a more personal and intimate space, and previous attempts by Meta to commercialize this space with ads and games have not been well-received. However, Channels offer users full control over the topics they follow, providing a more user-friendly experience. Given that WhatsApp remains the top messaging app globally and a key connectivity option for many, this expansion could well be a game-changer. Only time will tell if this unique addition to the messaging app will resonate with users and fulfill Meta’s hopes.
