Fortnite Controversy: Deku’s Smash Faces Backlash from Players
- 16 Sep 2023
Fortnite, a game that has swept the globe with its engaging gameplay and continually evolving landscape, is no stranger to controversy. The latest tumult comes in the form of Deku’s Smash, a Mythic item added to the game as part of a collaboration with popular anime series My Hero Academia. Reintroduced in the v26.10 update, the item has been met with significant backlash from the player community, many of whom argue it has completely ruined the current season.
The primary point of contention seems to be the item's inherent power. Deku’s Smash has been a bone of contention since its previous inclusion due to its seemingly overpowered nature. Some players were hoping the item would be permanently vaulted, but Epic Games thought otherwise. Alongside Deku’s Smash, the game developers also incorporated Todoroki’s Ice Wall, another My Hero Academia-inspired ability. Interestingly, this happens to be a perfect counter for Deku’s Smash, showing that Epic Games has attempted to balance things out.
However, the player community remains divided. While some players are excited about the anime collaboration and the addition of these powerful abilities, others are unhappy. They claim that Deku’s Smash disrupts the balance of the game and detracts from the overall experience. For instance, Reddit user Little_Timmy_is_Back vented his dissatisfaction, lamenting the decision to include the Mythic item and accusing Epic Games of ruining what was shaping up to be a well-balanced season.
The debate over Deku’s Smash rages on, with some players even making light of the situation by mocking the game developer's decision to reintroduce the item. But it's crucial to remember that Fortnite boasts a player base of over 500 million, and pleasing everyone is nearly impossible. As the saying goes, "You can't please all of the people all of the time." So, while some players are disgruntled, others are thrilled with the new changes.
There is some good news for the naysayers, though. Deku’s Smash is set to be vaulted in the upcoming v26.20 update, expected to be released on September 26. Until then, players will have to adapt and learn how to effectively use Todoroki’s Ice Wall and other strategies to counter the disputed item. This is yet another example of the dynamic nature of Fortnite, a game that never ceases to evolve and challenge its players, and while not everyone may be happy with every change, it's this ability to continually adapt that keeps the game fresh and exciting.
