Ubisoft Announced That It Is Postponing Its Upcoming Skull & Bones Game for the Sixth Time and Cancelling Three Other Unannounced Games
- 14 Jan 2023
Ubisoft has announced that it has, for the sixth time, delayed Skull & Bones and has canceled three more unannounced games due to major challenges in the industry, the underperformance of some of its recent titles, and an upcoming restructuring. Investors have raised concerns about the future of Ubisoft and its remaining games, but the company has reassured that it still has a strong line-up for the upcoming fiscal year.
In a press release, Ubisoft outlined a new strategy for the remainder of its fiscal year and lowered expectations for the last fiscal quarter. It explained that the industry has shifted towards mega-brands and long-lasting titles and that games from its recent investments have yet to be released, while some of its recent launches have not performed as well as expected. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023 were specifically called out as having underperformed.
In response to these issues, Ubisoft has decided to delay Skull & Bones for the sixth time and has also canceled three unannounced projects. The company is additionally depreciating €500m of research and development on upcoming premium and free-to-play games and the games they've canceled. It's looking to focus on fewer games going forward and potentially restructure and reduce costs in the coming year.
Investors have raised concerns about what remains for Ubisoft with all these delays and cancellations, but the company has reassured that for the upcoming fiscal year, it has Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (which was already delayed once), Assassin's Creed: Mirage (revealed last September), and "other premium unannounced games, including a large one."
The delay of Skull & Bones means that it won’t be released until at least April of 2023 and may be as late as December. This is a huge disappointment for Ubisoft fans, but the company has stated that it is a necessary move for them to stay competitive and continue to produce quality content.
In conclusion, Ubisoft’s decision to cancel three unannounced titles and delay Skull and Bones for the sixth time is a sign of the company’s shift in focus. Rather than trying to develop too many projects at once, Ubisoft is now focusing on the titles they have already announced and delivering quality games. This shift in focus may result in fewer releases from the French publisher in the near future, but it could also lead to more polished titles that fans can enjoy.
