Xbox Consoles Will Now Default to Power-Saving Settings as Microsoft Seeks to Reduce Carbon Footprint
- 1/12/2023
Microsoft has announced that it is rolling out an update for all Xbox consoles that will make energy-saving features the default option. This update is part of the company's goal to become a "carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste" company by 2030.
The new update will reduce power consumption when the console is off while not affecting performance or update installation. It also provides an optional “Instant On” mode that boots the console faster but uses 20 times more energy. Additionally, the console will no longer wake up during the nightly maintenance period of between 2-6 AM but instead will wake up at a time when renewable energy is used in the local energy grid. This will help to decrease fossil fuel dependency and CO2 emissions and could potentially save users money.
Furthermore, Microsoft encourages all gamers to learn more about the power setting options available to them, as every small step taken can have a larger collective impact. For example, for every two consoles that switch to Shutdown (energy saving) for one year, the equivalent amount of carbon removed by one tree planted and grown for a decade is saved.
Microsoft is also investing in renewable energy sources and sustainable practices to reduce its overall environmental impact. They have invested in wind and solar farms to provide clean energy, as well as partnered with the World Resources Institute to create renewable energy projects to reduce their carbon footprint.
In addition to the energy-saving mode, Microsoft is also working on other initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint. This includes increasing its use of renewable energy sources and investing in green technologies. This will help to further reduce the company's carbon emissions, which is an important step in the fight against climate change.
Conclusion
Microsoft’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and create a more sustainable future are commendable, and it is encouraging to see them taking steps to create a carbon-neutral future. With this new Xbox update, gamers can do their part to reduce their carbon footprint and help create a cleaner and more sustainable environment. This is a great way for gamers to do their part in helping the planet, as every small action can have a larger collective impact.
