Microsoft Forms New Team Within Blizzard to Develop AA Games Based on Existing IP – Rumour
- 7 Aug 2024
Blizzard Entertainment, part of the Microsoft family, is taking dynamic steps to breathe life back into its cherished intellectual properties that have been inactive for too long. A recent report indicates that the company has formed a new development team to create smaller AA games inspired by its existing franchises, including iconic titles like StarCraft and the popular WarCraft series.
The newly established team is reportedly made up largely of former developers from King, the well-known studio behind Candy Crush, which is also under the Activision umbrella owned by Microsoft. This background suggests a potential leaning towards mobile-targeted games. However, given Microsoft’s platform-agnostic strategy, these games are not likely to be exclusive to mobile platforms.
Internal sources suggest that Microsoft is encouraging a focus on smaller-scale game development, driven by rising concerns over the escalating costs and extended timelines typically associated with AAA game production. By fostering more collaboration among smaller teams, Microsoft aims to streamline the creative process, drawing inspiration from Nintendo’s successful model.
While there is excitement about the newly formed team within Blizzard and what it may be crafting, the specifics remain under wraps. However, with a treasure trove of beloved Blizzard IP, there is ample opportunity for smaller games to emerge and connect deeply with fans in a timely manner.
