Fable's 20th Anniversary: Fan-Made Game Boy Color Edition
- 20 Oct 2024
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the cherished Fable series, a dedicated fan has crafted a unique remake of the classic Xbox role-playing game for the Game Boy Color. This fan-made version is freely available to all players. Despite the lack of official celebrations by Xbox for this anniversary, this fan’s endeavor has brought to life a version of Fable with a nostalgic, retro twist.
James Grice has recently launched his project, titled Fable: 20th Anniversary Game Boy Color Demake, on a well-known indie game platform. His creation offers a succinct homage to the game’s opening scenes in Oakvale, complete with the beloved chicken-kicking feature. Players reenter the world of Fable as a young boy, known simply as 'lad', who is on a quest to gather the last few gifts for his sister’s birthday. This involves running various errands to collect gold while making morally grey choices, a hallmark of the Fable series. Decisions include whether to keep a man’s affair secret or reveal it, and choosing to either protect a child from bullies or join them.
Grice has shared that his childhood fascination with Fable sparked his curiosity about how the game would perform on simpler gaming systems. Finding himself with free time, he spent four days developing his first Game Boy game, choosing Fable to honor its 20th anniversary.
The game features a captivating chiptune rendition of the original Fable’s soundtrack, and impressively, it includes fully voiced cutscenes—a rare treat for the Game Boy Color. While the graphics may sometimes merge trees with human figures, the core of Fable’s storytelling is preserved.
Players can enjoy this charming demake in a web browser or on any compatible Game Boy Color device, with the gameplay lasting around 20 minutes. Grice is considering expanding the game to include the Guild Graduation scene, contingent on community interest.
For those eager to revisit Albion, keep an eye on the latest Fable installment currently being developed by the studio behind Forza Horizon.
