Belgium Bans TikTok on Work Phones Citing Security Risks
- 3/15/2023
The Belgian federal government has recently released a statement banning the use of the popular Chinese-owned video app TikTok on work phones due to security risks. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced that the Belgian national security council had warned of the potential dangers associated with the app and its Chinese parent company ByteDance.
The security council had expressed its concern over the large amounts of user data collected by TikTok and the fact that it is required to cooperate with Chinese intelligence services.
TikTok, which has over 100 million users worldwide, collects a variety of user data, including biometrics, location, and contact information. Additionally, the app has been criticized for its lack of transparency, which could present a risk to users’ personal and sensitive information.
The ban is meant to ensure the security of Belgian federal employees, as well as the data of the citizens of Belgium. De Croo noted that the government is committed to protecting its citizens’ privacy and data, and that the ban is necessary to ensure that this is the case.
Furthermore, the move to ban TikTok from work phones could be a sign of growing tension between the European Union and China. The European Union has been vocal about its concerns over the security of the data of its citizens, and this ban could be another step in ensuring that their data remains safe.
The Belgian federal government's decision to ban TikTok on work phones is a clear indication that it is taking steps to protect its citizens’ data and privacy. The security council’s warning and the app’s lack of transparency were the primary factors in this decision.
The ban could also be a sign of growing tension between the European Union and China, and a warning sign to other countries that they should be cautious when it comes to data privacy.
