Amazon Cuts 18,000 Jobs Across US, Canada, and Costa Rica
- 1/19/2023
Amazon is cutting 18,000 jobs across the US, Canada, and Costa Rica as part of its plan to reduce its workforce. This comes as the tech sector is facing a difficult time, with many companies cutting back on their workforce and costs to prepare for a worsening global economy. Amazon is reportedly terminating 2,300 employees in Seattle and Bellevue, according to an update on the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN).
The job cuts are part of a series of layoffs that were announced in April, when Amazon said it would reduce its workforce of more than 800,000 worldwide. The company is reportedly focusing on areas that are not as profitable, such as Amazon Web Services and its advertising business. This will result in a reduction in the number of employees in these areas. Additionally, Amazon is also cutting back on temporary workers and reducing its investments in areas such as research and development.
The job cuts will primarily affect warehouse and delivery workers, who were hired during the pandemic to meet the surge in demand for online orders. Amazon is also reportedly cutting back on its white-collar workers, which includes engineers, product managers, and other technical roles.
The job cuts are a sign of the times, as the tech sector is facing a difficult time due to the pandemic and the worsening global economy. It is uncertain how many of the 18,000 jobs will be filled by Amazon in the future, as the company is looking to reduce its workforce and costs.
